Data Collection in the Great Temple of Petra

a field work with Andrew Willis for the Shape Lab

The Great Temple of Petra, Jordan

Andrew Willis and I realized a campaign of field measurements on the archaeological site of the Great Temple in Petra, Jordan. We collaborated on the site with the team of archaeologists directed by Martha Joukowsky and the Jordanian Department of Antiquities to gather 3D scans, photos and video sequences of artefacts and architectural remains. In the space of three weeks, we collected high resolution 3d scans and images of sculptural artefacts, pottery fragments and inscribed marble, as well as several hours of video of the architectural remains on the site itself, all to be used in the project. We also experienced the peculiarities of an archaeological dig site, where electricity lacks completely and dust is everywhere! Anyway, here are some images on this great adventure...

Our daily activities: recording photographic and video data on site and building 3D models of important artefacts from a laser scanner

A sample of the data: images and video of architectural features, with or without a calibration pattern, a wall image for the WallDrawer program, a scanned 3D model of an elephant-headed capital, inscribed marble fragments and pot fragments that have been scanned to be reassembled.

A reconstituted mask produced from the 3D scans of its broken pieces and assembled by Pr.Richard Fishman.
